Knee replacement surgery : Let's start moving

Total knee replacement is a common orthopaedic procedure which is used to replace the damaged or worn out surfaces of the knee. Replacing these surfaces with an implant or prosthesis will relieve pain and increase mobility, allowing everyday activities to be pain free. Lately, invasive knee replacement in India has evolved with time and is one of the easy pain relieving procedure when compared to the traditional methods.

The traditional approach to knee replacement makes use of a long vertical incision at the centre of the knee to view and make changes in the joint. Invasive knee replacement is an alteration of this approach. The surgeon uses a shorter incision and a different, less-invasive technique to expose the joint, with the goal of reducing postoperative pain and speedy recovery.

What happens during invasive knee replacement?

In invasive knee replacement, the surgical procedure is similar to that of total knee replacement, but there is less cutting of the tissue surrounding the knee. Also, specially designed surgical instruments are used to make the femur and tibia ready and to place the implants properly. The invasive knee replacement procedure is performed through a comparatively short incision of 4 to 6 inches which is less when compared to 8 to 10 inches for traditional knee replacement. A smaller incision allows less tissue disturbance. In addition to a shorter incision, the technique which is used to open the knee is less invasive. As the techniques used to expose the joints involve less disruption to the muscles, it will lead to less postoperative pain and reduced recovery time.

Who can have an invasive knee replacement?

Invasive knee replacement is not suitable for all the patients. The doctor will conduct a thorough evaluation and will consider several factors before determining if the procedure is an option for the patient or no. Generally, the patients for invasive procedures are not obese, younger, healthier, stronger and more motivated to actively participate in the rehabilitation process, when compared to patients who have to undergo the traditional surgery. Invasive surgeries are not suitable for patients who are overweight or who have already undergone other knee surgeries. Also the patients who have some significant deformities in the knee, those who are too muscular and those with health problems that slow down the wound healing process are at a higher risk for problems from invasive knee replacement.

What Do You Know about Knee Replacement Surgery?

Who Needs Knee Replacement Surgery?
Your doctor may consider knee replacement surgery if you have a stiff, painful knee that makes it difficult to perform even the simplest of activities, and other treatments are no longer working. This surgery is generally reserved for people over age 50 who have severe osteoarthritis.

What Happens During Knee Replacement Surgery?
Once you are under general anesthesia (meaning you are temporarily put to sleep) or spinal/epidural anesthesia (numb below the waist), an 8- to 12-inch cut is made in the front of the knee. The damaged part of the joint is removed from the surface of the bones, and the surfaces are then shaped to hold a metal or plastic artificial joint. The artificial joint is attached to the thigh bone, shin and knee cap either with cement or a special material. When fit together, the attached artificial parts form the joint, relying on the surrounding muscles and ligaments for support and function.

What Happens After Knee Replacement Surgery?
The average hospital stay after knee joint replacement is usually three to five days. The vast majority of people who undergo knee joint replacement surgery have dramatic improvement. This improvement is most notable one month or more after surgery. The pain caused by the damaged joint is relieved when the new gliding surface is constructed during surgery.

After knee joint replacement, people are standing and moving the joint the day after surgery. At first, you may walk with the help of parallel bars, and then a walking device -- such as crutches, walker, or cane -- will be used until your knee is able to support your full body weight. After about six weeks, most people are walking comfortably with minimal assistance. Once muscle strength is restored with physical therapy, people who have had knee joint replacement surgery can enjoy most activities (except running and jumping).
